European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen will join a panel of experts on Saturday at the Berlin Olympic Stadium for a discussion on how national and international associations are fighting back against doping in sport.

The session, set up by the Berlin 2018 Organising Committee, will take place from 4.00pm to 6.00pm on August 11 in a hall at the East Gate entrance to the stadium.

Some of the questions to be addressed include: What are the national and international associations doing to combat doping? What are the different perspectives? What can politics do? What measures is the National Anti-Doping Agency of Germany (NADA) taking to combat this problem?

This is an extremely important topic for all sports, not just athletics, as it directly affects the integrity of our competitions,” said President Hansen. “Here in Berlin for the European Championships, we are doing our utmost to deter cheating. This includes conducting doping tests on one third of the athletes who are participating here, both pre competition and in competition, and enacting educational campaigns to warn athletes, coaches and other members of the entourage about the dangers of doping and its consequences. To ensure a clean playing field, a concerted effort by interests from many backgrounds is required.”

Joining President Hansen on the panel are eminent guests from politics, sports, anti-doping bodies and the media. They include Prof. Dr. Winfried Bausback, Minister of State at the Department of Justice; Dagmar Freitag, Chairwoman of the Sports Committee of the GermanBundestag; Dr. Lars Mortsiefer, NADA Management Board; Hajo Seppelt, journalist, ARD; and Silke Kassner, DOSB Athletes Spokeswoman.

The discussion will be hosted and moderated by Dr. Clemens Prokop, President of the Berlin 2018 Organising Committee.

European Athletics is committed to keeping athletes healthy and adheres to a zero-tolerance policy with respect to doping. In addition to in-competition testing and working closely with the Athletes Intelligence Unit to share intelligence and perform target testing, European Athletics has developed the I Run Clean e-learning platform, which is now available in 25 languages, and will make completion of the programme mandatory for all athletes participating in future European championship events.
